I often have Mamas contacting me, completely stressed out because they have been told that they cannot get newborn photos if baby is older than 14 days.
Maybe the baby is a week old, but they can't get a session before baby is 3 weeks, maybe baby was booked in but they had to be in NICU for a couple of weeks.
Upsetting new Mums is not a thing I want to do.
My philosophy about everything in life is "we will find a way". It's about managing expectations and communicating, finding a way to celebrate and document this new life within the limits of reality.
Babies over two weeks of age are "often" not as bendy as younger babies, the can be more alert and sensitive. However, in my experience - babies around two weeks often sleep better as feeding is established and they are good and full. Often older babies will not be happy in traditional newborn poses, but they will happily lie in relaxed, baby led poses so long as the room is warm.
I will never tell you that I can't photograph your newborn over 14 days of age, I will talk with you about the limits of older babies and explain that prop, in hands and parent shots are our best bet, along with a try at posed if desired. I will attempt newborn style shoots up to 4-6 weeks, after that we will try different options (that said, one of my best posers was 7 weeks old!).
The babies in the photos below are all over two weeks, most are 4-6 weeks.
